Shannamar Dewey, doctoral candidate from Aldrin Gomes's lab, is the 2013 recipient of the Irving I. Hertzendorf Memorial Award in Physiology. This award is given to the best student with outstanding qualities as a scholar and a humanitarian (March 2013).

Michael Wright, a post-doc from Brian Mulloney's lab, was awarded a UC Davis Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Asadullah Awan, an NPB major student, received the 2013 Undergraduate Student of the Year Award. This award is given annually to a graduating senior in recognition of outstanding academic achievement, participation in significant research activities, and involvement in the campus and community. An Honors Reception will be held on May 31, 2013.

Karen Zito and Keith Baar were promoted to Associate Professor.

Amanda Klein, a 2012 doctoral graduate from Earl Carsten's lab, is the 2012-13 recipient of the Loren D. Carlson Prize in Physiology for her research on how nerve fibers transmit irritating sensations such as itch and burn to the brain (March 11, 2013).

Jeff Weidner is currently serving as UC Davis Interim Faculty Athletics Representative.

Our dear friend Barbara Chapman, Professor of NPB, passed away on February 11 after a battle with cancer. Barbara was beloved by all of us in NPB, was a great scientist and wonderful colleague. Several NPB faculty are recipients of the inaugural Research Investments in the Sciences and Engineering (RISE) awards. The competition winners represent the finest interdisciplinary concepts among UC Davis faculty. Kimberley McAllister is the team leader for the theme titled “I-CAN SZ (Interdisciplinary, Collaborative, Analysis of Neuroimmune-Based Schizophrenia)”. Jack Werner and Hwai-Jong Cheng are team members for the theme titled “The UC Davis Eye-Prod: Functional Imaging of Single Cells in the Eyes of Living Animals under Normal, Pathogenic and Regenerative Conditions”. Presentations of their work were held on October 15, 2012.
